TipTuesday #8: Choosing the most comfortable heels

How to choose comfortable high heels? Is it even possible? This tip will help you increase the chances of choosing comfortable high heels!

Hello and welcome! Today I thought I’d share one of my favorite tips when it comes to choosing heels. Of course, the comfort of any shoe depends on a lot of factors, such as shoe construction and design, materials, and fit. However, this simple tip applies to any heels and helps find shoes that are easier to walk in simply due to physics. Let’s start!

The idea behind any comfortable heels is that they distribute the weight evenly and provide support exactly where it is needed. When we walk in high heels, the majority of the pressure is on the heel and on the ball of the foot:

This is why heels often have a soft pillowy pad under the ball of the foot – to offer more support and comfort. To provide the best support for feet the heel has to be located where the most pressure goes:

Generally speaking, when the heel is shifted towards the very end of the shoe (like on the pictures on the left), it becomes less effective in supporting the weight, which is why such heels are often less comfortable to walk and stand in. The shoes on the right have a much better positioning of the heel – it coincides with the center of the heel, where the most pressure is.

I hope you enjoyed this week’s #TipTuesday!

  1. I did not know there is some science in wearing heels! Good thing I always stick to what’s comfortable for me, flats and more flats. 😅 Now that you mention it, I just ordered a pair of heels for a formal family event after Ncovid, I don’t know which is it from the two version that you described! Hope it’s the second. Thank you for sharing this post, this is really helpful! Wish you well!

    1. I didn’t think about it either because I usually go for flats too 😊 Around a year ago I somehow changed my opinion about heels, thinking ‘what if I just didn’t find comfortable ones that really fit my feet?’ so I browsed a lot and discovered this simple trick.

    1. Up until recently I was convinced that heels couldn’t be comfortable! I thought my feet just weren’t created for heels. Now I know that there’s a right pair of heels for any feet if you feel like wearing them – it just takes a while to find them 😊 By the way, this tip works for any heel height, even kitten heels.

      1. I always twist my ankle, even in flats, on a completely smooth floor (like trade center) 😂 😂 Never thought I’d wear heels in a million years! But then took the risk once and here I am, wanting to buy everything! ☺
Found a few good tricks to make them work and can’t wait to share them all!
