Greetings on this beautiful spring day! If you’ve read my post about 10 ways to look expensive on a budget, you know that I appreciate the power of accessories a lot. It refers to the accessories such as buckles, buttons, and eyelets as well as jewelry, of course!
When I saw this jacket, it seemed completely perfect for me in every sense, except for the detailing and accessories – buttons, buckle, and eyelets. When I got the jacket, I finally was able to take all the measurements and start looking for the right accessories. Who even thought of putting those silver metal accessories on a warm tone olive jacket? I just had to fix it! Come with me on a small crafting journey and see how changing accessories can jazz up the look of a simple jacket!
If you’ve read my post about dealing with the ‘wardrobe graveyard’ then you know that I usually do my best to get the lowest cost-per-wear for every item in my wardrobe. Usually I try to buy items that don’t require any customization at all, but in certain cases I’m willing to purchase an item if it requires some work to be perfected and cut to my personal liking. This story is about an olive green jacket from the second category 😊 I liked everything about this jacket – the color (suits perfectly for my warm tone skin and hazel eyes), sleeve shape, attention to detail, and the belt. My only issue were the buckle, eyelets, and buttons.
This is how the jacket looked on the pictures when I ordered it (pictures from the product page):

The real color of the jacket is very hard to catch on camera – in reality it’s a warm olive color. The silver or even palladium color eyelets on the belt and the belt buckle look bleak against this rich shade of green. It doesn’t compliment it in any way, same as these simple plastic buttons.
By the way, none of the links in this post are affiliate or sponsored. I bought these items myself and here just describing my experience. I leave the links for readers’ convenience, nothing more.
As soon as I received the jacket, I measured the eyelet diameter and ordered a set of antique bronze eyelets and a tool used to install them (silver rod):

The eyelets are actually much easier to install than I initially thought. I took the old eyelets with a pair or pliers and then started installing the new ones. I took the basis, put the larger part on the holder, then belt on top, and then the thin part of the eyelet on top of that and the rod on the holder. One or two hits with a hammer and eyelets are installed:

Then the buckle: the old one was really too heavy for the thin cotton belt as well as very sharp on the edges. I ordered new plastic one in dark brown:

Now the belt looks much better:

And now onto buttons!
I ordered two sets of buttons: antique gold color and bronze color. Here’s how they look on the fabric next to the original buttons:

Here’s buttons in daylight:

I think the bronze ones look the best with the new eyelets and buckle, but antique gold ones are very beautiful and shiny – so hard to decide!
How do you think – bronze or antique gold? I’m looking forward to your comments!

Absolutely! And sometimes completely transforms an item from an average to outstanding. I sometimes do embroidery, change buttons, eyelets, and buckles, and belts. How about you – what are your favorite ways to customize clothing? I’d love to know!

I love attaching little gems, crystals and pearls. I often change buttons because I think a good quality button makes any piece look more luxe. I also love attaching scarves to handbags.
