How to get rid of dry and flaky scalp – my best strategies for hair care

In my previous post, I’ve talked about the issue of dry and flaky scalp and the products that helped me solve it. In this post I’d like to focus on the best strategies for hair care that help with this problem. Now, this is just my experience and I’m not a dermatologist or trichologist, therefore I can tell relying only on my own experience. So without further ado, let’s start!

1.Brushing regularly. I’ve noticed that regular brushing really helps with dry and flaky scalp problem. I have this kind of wooden brush with rounded thick bristles that massage the scalp really well without scratching it:

For me it’s enough to thoroughly brush the hair once a day. That being said, additional scalp massage like this results in that the hair becomes oily quicker, but for me it’s not that much of a sacrifice for a healthier scalp.

2.Consistent washing. While researching dry and flaky scalp remedies, I’ve read a lot about how washing strips the natural oils from the scalp, making it even more dry. I usually wash my hair every other day, so I tried to extend that to once every 3 days. My issue became even worse – I think because the old skin cells weren’t washed off properly and the dirt and oils impaired the natural nourishment of the scalp.

3.Using shampoo only once. I love shampooing and usually I used it twice during every wash – apply-massage-rince-repeat kind of routine. However, as I switched to only apply-massage-rince, I’ve noticed that my hair didn’t get oily quicker than usual, while my scalp became less dry. Now I use only a bit of shampoo, which also means savings (although it’s nothing compared to health).

4.Supporting the skin health with vitamins. As I’ve already mentioned in my previous post, biotin has become an integral part of my healthy scalp routine. It helps the skin renew itself better and more effectively, while healthy nails and hair come as a nice bonus.

5.Using coconut oil. I’ve mentioned before that using coconut oil on my scalp didn’t solve the problem completely, but it did provide significant relief. I use only virgin cold-pressed coconut oil and it definitely helps when my scalp gets especially dry. Coconut oil is a great multitasker in skincare in general – I use it to treat dry lips, on my legs after shaving, and elbows to make skin softer.

6.Minimizing the time the wet hair spends wrapped in a towel. I know that walking around with hair wrapped in a towel after washing is bad for the hair, but I’ve also noticed that it’s bad for the scalp. Every time I wash my hair, I wrap it for a few minutes, then wrap it in dry towel once again for a few minutes to soak the water up, and then remove it ASAP. My hair has become considerably better and shinier, while scalp dryness – a bit less of an issue.

7.Skipping on conditioners and silicone-based hair oils. This might seem crazy, but I don’t use conditioner anymore – just don’t feel the need to. I’ve been growing out my natural hair color for a few years now and finally cut all the hair that’s ever been chemically treated, so my hair doesn’t need extra smoothing anymore. The shampoo I’ve mentioned in my previous post is also doing its job because it’s very nourishing. As for hair oils and treatments, I’ve used them for years and over time started noticing the extreme damage they result in. The forever hyped Moroccanoil Treatment has Cyclomethicone & Dimethicone as first ingredients – of course it’ll make the hair shiny! However, over time silicones make the hair more brittle and dull, which is a great marketing trick to make consumers buy more treatments that add shine. Skipping conditioner and hair oils has helped me reduce the buildup on the scalp and make it much healthier.

8.Wearing more relaxed hairstyles. I used to love wearing a high ponytail, which definitely was bad for blood circulation of the scalp. I’ve started wearing my hair down more often and bought lightweight hair clips to make casual messy buns. I use only those clips and telephone cord (invisibobble) type of hair ties instead of regular ties.

All of these strategies might not seem that dramatic, but they helped me get my scalp and hair back to the healthy state. I think the trick is to use them all together – then the result is really great.
